About Indooroopilly
Known as “Indro” to the locals, the suburb of Indooroopilly lies 6.5km west of the Brisbane CBD. Settlement of the area dates from the 1860s, with land used mainly for agriculture and dairy farming. Growth took place in the 1870s and 1880s, following the opening of the railway line. Lead and silver mining were carried out between 1919 and 1929. Significant residential and commercial development occurred during the post-war years.
The suburb has a significant commercial and retail presence and is home to Westfield Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, the largest shopping centre in the western suburbs. There are also many local shopping, café and restaurant options in the Station Street precinct.
For the cinema buff, Indooroopilly has two cinemas; Eldorado cinemas on Coonan Street and the Event Megaplex inside Indooroopilly Shopping Centre.
Indooroopilly is known as the hub for public transportation in the western suburbs. With all buses and trains in the area stopping at Indooroopilly, getting around Brisbane with ease is a major attraction.
Indooroopilly families are spoilt for choice, with state and private school options such as Indooroopilly State School, Brigidine Collage, Nudgee Junior and St Peter’s Lutheran College all close by while also only a stone’s throw away from the University of Queensland in neighbouring St Lucia.
